Spinneret is een sensorische circusvoorstelling die de emotie van angst onderzoekt als iets noodzakelijks en scheppends. Geïnspireerd door Antonin Artauds Theatre of Cruelty legt het werk de nadruk op fysieke intensiteit, sfeer en directe beleving, boven narratief vertellen. Angst wordt niet uitgelegd, maar beleefd, belichaamd en doorleefd.
Performers bewegen zich door spanning, kwetsbaarheid, controle en loslaten via luchtsuspensie, schaduwspel en live muziek.
Het werk haalt inspiratie uit de Traditionele Chinese Geneeskunde, waarin angst verbonden is met de winter, introspectie, water, de nieren, de geur van rotting, de smaak van zout en het gekreun van pijn.
Spinneret nodigt het publiek uit om ongemak te omarmen en aanwezig te blijven in de beleving ervan.
Judy Young is oprichter van Young Hoops en werkt als multidisciplinair maker, performer en facilitator op het snijvlak van circus, theater, geluid en poëtisch vertellen. Vanuit een belichaamde praktijk creëert ze ervaringen die uitnodigen tot verstilling, verbeelding en zachte vormen van zelfonderzoek. Geïnspireerd door culturele geschiedenissen, rituelen en somatische tradities verweeft ze deze invloeden tot hedendaagse performances die aansluiten bij de gevoeligheid en het ritme van onze huidige tijd.
Met een achtergrond in theater en meer dan tien jaar ervaring in circus, beweging en performance, beweegt Judy’s werk zich tussen fysieke techniek en emotionele, zintuiglijke beleving. Sinds 2019 integreert ze yoga, dans en somatische praktijken in haar lessen en creaties, waarin mindfulness, spel en expressie samenkomen. Sinds 2022 regisseert zij drie lopende producties en publiceerde zij twee eigen boeken. Momenteel studeert zij Traditionele Chinese Geneeskunde aan Shenzhou University Amsterdam, waar Chinese filosofie haar artistieke praktijk verder verdiept en voedt.
Spinneret is a sensory circus performance that explores fear as a force to inhabit and overcome. Performers hang and twist through the air, moving through tension and control, while shadow puppetry and live music accompaniment create an immersive space.
Inspired by Antonin Artaud's Theatre of Cruelty, Spinneret allows audiences to encounter emotional and physical dimensions of Fear. The work is further informed by Traditional Chinese Medicine, in which Fear is associated with Winter; the element of water, the kidneys, the scent of decay, the taste of salt, and the sound of groaning. These elemental correspondences shape the performance's rhythm and choreography.
Spinneret invites audiences to linger within discomfort, to feel it, and to move through it, surrendering to vunerability, and discovering its strange and generative beauty.
BIOGRAPHY
Judy Young is the founder of Young Hoops, a multidisciplinary artist, facilitator, and show-maker creating work at the intersection of circus, theatre, sound, and poetic storytelling. Rooted in embodied practice, her work invites audiences and participants into spaces of grounding, imagination, and gentle self-discovery. Drawing from cultural histories, ritual, and somatic traditions, she weaves contemporary performance experiences that respond to the pace, sensitivity, and attention of modern life.
With a background in theatre and over a decade of experience in circus, movement, and performance, Judy’s practice bridges physical skill with emotional and sensory exploration. Since 2019, she has incorporated yoga, dance, and somatic practices into her teaching and creative work, developing workshops and performances that merge mindfulness with play and expression. Since 2022, she has directed three ongoing productions and published two self-authored books. She is currently studying Traditional Chinese Medicine at Shenzhou University Amsterdam, where Chinese philosophy continues to deepen and inspire her artistic practice.
