The play is in Italian but due to music and choreography, it is enjoyable also for a non-Italian audience.

Il Korego Theater Group presenta la sua ultima produzione prima della pausa estiva: Lisistrata di Aristofane, per la regia di Carmelinda Gentile.

Lisistrata di Aristofane è una commedia che più di ogni altra sottolinea la forza motrice del sesso, ritenuto già dai Greci tanto potente da poter condurre alla soluzione di una guerra. La storia è quella di una donna pronta a sacrificare il proprio piacere e quello delle sue concittadine per convincere gli uomini alla pace duratura. Lisistrata è un’opera di una modernità impressionante, Aristofane qui pone le donne sullo stesso piano degli uomini. È un riscatto di genere, o meglio una vera e propria guerra tra i generi, animata dall’intenzione più nobile: ristabilire la quiete e la tranquillità.

L’aspetto interessante tuttavia è un altro; la concretezza di questa commedia e la sua vicinanza alla realtà, antica come contemporanea, è infatti insita nell’arma che Lisistrata utilizza per vincere la sua battaglia: la libido.

L’eroina raduna nell’acropoli le donne della città e le convince ad attuare uno sciopero del sesso. Se tutte si rifiuteranno di concedersi, gli uomini finiranno per impazzire e allora, sedotti e non accontentati, potranno abbassare le armi e finalmente ascoltare le loro mogli che altro non vogliono se non porre fine al sanguinoso conflitto cui da ormai troppi anni sono costrette ad assistere.

The Korego Theater Group presents its latest production before the summer break: Lysistrata by Aristophanes, directed by Carmelinda Gentile.

Lysistrata by Aristophanes is a comedy that more than any other emphasizes the driving force of sex, considered by the Greeks so powerful that it could lead to the ceasing of war. A woman – Lysistrata – is ready to sacrifice her own pleasure and that of her fellow female citizens to induce men to cease the war. Lysistrata is a work of impressive modernity, Aristophanes here places women on the same level as men. It is a gender redemption, or rather a real war between genders, animated by the noblest intention: to restore peace and tranquillity.

The interesting aspect however is another; the concreteness of this comedy and its proximity to reality, as ancient as it is contemporary, is in fact inherent in the weapon that Lysistrata uses to win her battle: libido.

The heroine gathers the women of the city in the acropolis and convinces them to carry out a sex strike. If everyone refuses to indulge, men will end up going crazy and then, seduced and not satisfied, they will lay down their arms and finally listen to their wives who don't want anything else but to put an end to the bloody conflict, which they are being forced to witness for far too long now.
